"Surely He has borne our griefs
And carried our sorrows...
And by His stripes we are healed."
(from Isaiah 53)
There's a tendency sometimes to spiritualize Jesus' death to the point that we think He suffered and died only for sin. But salvation includes EVERYTHING, not just sin. We hurt with physical pain and sickness, emotional pain and sickness, and all the many forms of suffering, and sorrow, and grief. Sometimes we suffer as a consequence of our own choices, and yes, even our own sinfulness. Other times, what else can be said, but life is cruel, and we are sometimes its victims. That's why we need Jesus!
That's why Jesus' death, His burial, and His resurrection covers more than just victory over sin. Jesus' victory includes sin, sickness, death, the devil, and every cruelty of life! Jesus' victory means WE ARE VICTORS, NOT VICTIMS! God doesn't keep all the cruelties of life away from us, but He causes us to stand and rise above it. And, that's the greater victory!
